A grand jury found former Florida State College at Jacksonville President Steve Wallace innocent of any criminal actions in an ongoing dispute between the college and Wallace regarding compensation. The Florida Times-Union reported Thursday on the April 24 grand jury report, which said that the contract between Wallace and the college was "vague" when it came to defining what type of compensatory time Wallace was eligible for and how leave time would be rolled over year-to-year.
Wallace's use of comp time had been under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. In December, FSCJ's board of trustees asked Wallace to repay $160,473 in compensatory time he took during his 15-year tenure at the college.
Wallace was paid more than $570,000 for unused leave time since he stepped down in 2012, and the school has spent $365,000 in outside legal services related to the dispute.
