Poll Shows Support For Marriage Equality Growing In Florida

Equality Florida

A new poll of Florida voters shows growing support for gay marriage in the Sunshine State. For the first time since it began asking the question, Public Policy Polling found a plurality of voters now support gay marriage, 47 to 44 percent.

It’s a 14 percent shift from an October 2011 poll.

Public Policy Polling Director Tom Jensen said much of the change comes from younger voters.

"On the gay marriage issue we find voters under 45 support it 58 to 34 (percent), so even if it's close overall in the state, it's really not close at all when it comes to the younger generation," he said.

Jensen said Florida’s trend toward more acceptance of gay marriage is similar to polling trends across the country.

Six South Florida couples are suing to overturn the state’s constitutional amendment banning gay marriage approved by voters in 2008.
