'Folio Weekly' Temporarily Scales Back To Monthly Amid COVID-19

The bins will be empty a little longer, and wallets a little thinner.

On Wednesday, Folio Weekly — Jacksonville’s longstanding alternative-weekly newspaper — announced it would skip publication next week and pivot to monthly distribution. Just in time for the publication’s 33rd anniversary.

Editor-in-chief Georgio Valentino confirmed the format change to WJCT News partner The Florida Times-Union along with a staff-wide pay cut, but said both are temporary.

“This is a temporary arrangement, but it will likely last longer than one month,” Valentino — who is stranded in Greece, where he was vacationing before the coronavirus largely halted travel — said in an email.

“As an alt-weekly, our raison d’être (and our ad revenue stream) is events-oriented. When COVID-19 cancelled the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, a hundred alt-weeklies across the country were faced with some tough decisions.”
