Duval elementary school safety patrols honored the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday Friday afternoon during a field trip to the University of North Florida.

Woodland Acres Elementary School fifth-graders are learning about civil rights this month. Ten-year-old Jon Goberdhan says his class just read an essay about Jackie Robinson.

“Civil Rights is what’s going to change our country,” he says. “There’s some bad things like injustice and cruelty and lots of things getting stolen. Jackie Robinson was a black person, but when he went into baseball he desegregated it.”

The kids took turns reading parts of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Then one-by-one they shared a dream of their own for the world. One student said her dream is for everyone to have health care. Another student said he wants everyone homeless person housed.

Wani Natana says his dream is for mothers and fathers.

“Many people in different states and places, they don’t have enough money to take care of their children,  and some parents don’t have any jobs,” he said.

He says when he thinks about the journeys people have taken to get civil rights it "stays in my heart."
