Jacksonville Icemen Make ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs

Jacksonville Icemen

The Jacksonville Icemen are headed to the 2019 Kelly Cup playoffs in the ECHL.

WJCT Sports Analyst Cole Pepper says the Icemen clinched a spot in the post-season over the weekend.

“Jacksonville right now holds the third seed in the playoffs but could move up to second before the end of the regular season.  The top four teams in each division make the playoffs - already the Florida Everblades and the Orlando Solar Bears have clinched spots in the South Division as well – so [there’s] plenty of Florida representation for the ECHL post season,” Pepper said.

Saturday the Icemen won their final regular-season homegame at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena with a 4-3 victory over Atlanta in front of a sold out crowd of 8,955.

This mark’s the Icemen’s second season in Jacksonville.  The team relocated to Jacksonville in 2017 from Evansville, Indiana.

Single game tickets for the Icemen’s first two home games of the Kelly Cup playoffs go on sale Thursday morning at 10.

The Icemen will face the Solar Bears in Orlando this Sunday in their final regular-season game.

Clarification: An earlier version of this story included a reference to the East Coast Hockey League. The ECHL league informed WJCT News that while ECHL was an acronym for the East Coast Hockey League, it was shortened to just ECHL in 2003 after seven expansion teams from the Western U.S. were welcomed.
