No Plans? No Problem! Things To Do This Weekend (And Next Week) On The First Coast

Jacksonville Historical Society

There's something strange, and fun, in the neighborhood as humor and Halloween scares round out our list of things to do on the First Coast this weekend. We've also tacked on two events slated for next week as an added BOO-nus!Friday, October 25 — Three years ago, comedian and political humorist Mark Russell announced he was retiring from public performances. Funny he should go back on his word since he’s made a living criticizing politicians for doing the same thing. Friday night at 8 p.m. Russell brings “The Laughter of Politics” to the Florida Theatre. More information at FloridaTheatre.com.

Saturday, October 26 — This weekend the Jacksonville Historical Society will stage what will surely be the greatest Halloween party in Jacksonville’s history at the Casket Factory, a mysterious old brick building on the edge of downtown.

The factory (pictured here) is 15,000 square-feet, partially covered with vines, and thought by many to be haunted. This event is a fund-raiser to support the restoration and maintenance of Old St. Luke’s Hospital, a national historical landmark constructed in 1878. Festivities start at 8 p.m. Tickets and info at Eventbrite.

Sunday, October 27 — The 30th Annual Caring Chefs, which features cuisine and wine from some of Northeast Florida’s finest restaurants, caterers and wine vendors including Aqua Grill, Bistro Aix, Blue Bamboo, Enza's, The Grotto, Havana Jax, North Beach Bistro, The Salty Fig and W90+ Wines takes place at The Avenues  on Sunday at 7 p.m. The event is a benefit for Children’s Home Society of Florida. Tickets and more info at CHSCaringChefs.org.

Also, don't forget WJCT 89.9 FM is rolling out a brand new weekend schedule starting this week, including NPR quiz show Ask Me Another and the premiere of Al Letson's Freestyle.Click here to see the new schedule here and connect to WJCT via social media.

The show, presented by WJCT, begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Times-Union Center's Jacoby Concert Hall. Tickets and information at ArtistSeriesJax.org.
