Asteroid To Pass Earth Closer Than The Moon This Afternoon

NASA/JPL-Caltech

At around 5 p.m. a newly discovered asteroid named DX-110 will hurtle between us and the moon. What makes this asteroid fly-by noteworthy, scientists say, is how close it will come to the earth.

"It’s only 100 feet wide and will come within about 218,000 miles from our planet," said Tom Webber, director of the Brian Gooding Planetarium at Jacksonville’s Museum of Science and History.

"That is within the orbit of the moon which is, depending on where it is in its orbit, between say 234,000-250,000 miles away from the earth.”

According to Webber, asteroids zip by us all the time, although this one will be closer than most.
