Today’s Media Roundtable discussed some of the top stories in the First Coast, including:
- On Tuesday, City Council’s Rules Committee voted 6 to 1 in favor of new voting maps that will influence the political power structure in Jacksonville for the next decade.
- Florida’s legislative session ended Monday, and Gov. Ron DeSantis celebrated the controversial so-called Don’t Say Gay bill and the Stop WOKE Act. He also signed off on a plan to overhaul standardized testing.
- Councilman Matt Carlucci filed legislation yesterday with a new funding plan for removing Jacksonville’s remaining Confederate monuments.
- The state legislative session concluded Monday, but not before DeSantis appointed Esther Byrd of Neptune Beach to the state Board of Education. Byrd would join the board pending Senate confirmation.
- LeAnna Cumber opened a campaign account Thursday. She is expected to announce her mayoral run on Monday afternoon. She’s been a strong fundraiser in the past, so we could see a lot more money into the race.
