Local races for office are increasingly getting national attention in today’s polarized political climate. That includes school board races. As we approach next month’s primary election, the "First Coast Connect" team is interviewing candidates for office.

January 6 committee hearings
The House Jan. 6 committee has unveiled a series of revelations involving former President Donald Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election. The hearings are expected to have a high-profile conclusion this week.
Extremist groups like the Proud Boys were involved in the insurrection attempt and have a heavy presence in our state. There are more than four dozen hate groups operating in Florida, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol plans another hearing later this week, at 8 p.m. Thursday. WJCT will carry live coverage.

Heat mapping
Citizen scientists are helping the city of Jacksonville with an important project to deal with climate change: mapping this region’s heat.
Jacksonville is the first, and one of the biggest cities, that will be heat mapping this year as part of an annual effort of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that started five years ago. Through the NOAA-funded program, dozens of local volunteers are given heat sensors to help collect data for the project.
