Plant Vogtle Unit 3.

A nuclear reactor in Georgia is on pace to provide power to customers here in Jacksonville.

The generator at Vogtle Unit 3 has generated electricity for the first time, and it has successfully synchronized and connected to the electric grid, according to Georgia Power. Meanwhile at Unit 4, nuclear operators started hot functional testing last month. Both of these milestones mark major steps toward operations.

Once those units are fully online, they will provide carbon-free electric power to customers in Georgia and Northeast Florida.

Plant Vogtle has had its issues over the past decade, including several delays and cost overruns. JEA is responsible for $3 billion of its cost, which has and will continue to affect customers’ rates.

Guests:

  • Jody Brooks, JEA chief administrative officer.
  • Steve Nesbit, former president of the American Nuclear Society.
