Black marijuana farmers; honey bees; Setlan Coffee; Cre8Jax

WJCT file

Race is one of the forces that shape American life, affecting everything from housing to policing, and even farming.

After years of delays, there’s a new state law designed to bring fairness to the state’s system for issuing licenses for marijuana production.

This will align state law with the federal Pigford v. Glickman settlement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which prohibits government discrimination against minority farmers.

After black farmers sued the government for discrimination, they won. Therefore rules have been set up to stop it from happening in the future, and now that rule applies to marijuana farms in the state.

State Sen. Tracie Davis of Jacksonville, who happens to be one of the lawmakers behind the Legislation, joined us today.

Honey bees

Scientists have successfully tested a way of boosting honey bees’ immune systems to help them fend off deadly viruses, which have contributed to the major losses of critical pollinators globally.

Dr. Daniel R Swale, senior author of the study, is associate director for training and special projects in the UF Emerging Pathogens Institute and associate professor in the UF/IFAS entomology and nematology department. He explained what all the buzz is about.

Setlan Coffee

There’s nothing better than that first cup of coffee of the day — except for the second cup of the day and drinking one or both while looking at art.

And now, thanks to Setlan Coffee Co. and MOCA Jax, you can do just that!

Tyler Osborne, founder of Setlan Coffee Co., explained how.

You can also enter a chance to win a giveaway. We are giving away one $25 gift card to Setlan. To enter, email firstcoastconnect@wjct.org and put “coffee” in the subject line. We will select a winner at random and notify them.
