The First Thanksgiving in historic St. Augustine

News4Jax

Today on First Coast Connect, we delved into the rich history of the first Thanksgiving in the historic setting of Saint Augustine. While the narrative of the first Thanksgiving is a familiar tale, how has our understanding of this historical event evolved, and what nuances have emerged as we revisit and reinterpret the origins of this tradition we know and love?

Guests:

  • Roger Smith, outreach manager at the St. Augustine Historical Society and assistant professor of history at Flagler College.
  • Jessica Clark, anchor and St .Johns County reporter for First Coast News.

FSU women’s soccer team

We also had the pleasure of chatting with head coach Brian Pensky, who shared insights into the undefeated women’s soccer team and the challenges they’ve overcome on the path to a successful season. Notably, the FSU women’s soccer team clinched a victory against the University of Texas in the NCAA Division1 Women’s Championship Sweet 16 on Sunday, securing their spot in the Elite 8. Their next challenge awaits as they face Pittsburgh this Friday.

Small business

Gregory Grant, administrator from Jacksonville's Small Emerging Business program, joined us to talk about the importance of supporting small and local businesses. We discussed the many challenges faced by small business owners and how Mayor Donna Deegan and the city aim to make jacksonville the “small biz capital of the Southeast.”

Biggby Coffee

Franchise owners Natalie and Kevin Clark introduced us to Biggby Coffee on Beach Boulevard, the first of its kind in Jacksonville.
