Then, Nassau County celebrates the inclusion of 55,000 acres in the state’s Florida Forever conservation plan. The protected land includes waters that are home to the Atlantic sturgeon, a fish on the federal endangered species list, as well as historic lands that were once settlements for American Indian nations like the Timucua, Uchees and Muskogees, as well as the African descended Gullah Geechee nation. These lands also include historic sites that were part of the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and the War of 1812.
