New research explores whether suspects and defendants can sufficiently understand their Miranda rights and consent to questioning by law enforcement. We ask the project’s lead researcher how drug or alcohol impairment can affect the rights of defendants. We also talk to a local DUI lawyer and a retired law enforcement officer about handling impaired interrogations.

Guests:

  • Mark Baughman, retired federal law enforcement officer, safety analyst and professional risk consultant.
  • Susan Cohen, DUI criminal defense attorney.
  • Jacqueline Evans, director of the Legal Psychology Graduate Program at Florida International University.

But first ... as Hurricane Helene takes aim at Florida, we get the latest forecast from First Coast News meteorologist Lew Turner and an update on preparations and potential impacts from the city’s emergency preparedness chief, Andre Ayoub.

Later, as storm winds intensify, Katie Jeffries of First Coast News gives a refresher on when and whether any local bridges could be closed.
