Ahead of his introduction Tuesday of legislation to hike the city’s solid waste fee, we ask the veteran lawmaker why — and why now? The legislation would increase the city’s garbage fee from $12.65 a month to $30.40 a month. Current fees don’t come close to covering the actual cost of the service, and the city has been “loaning” itself money to cover the gap. That debt is projected to reach $100 million by the end of this fiscal year and a half-billion by 2030 if no action is taken.

Then, an educator’s effort to connect old and young Black men to discuss their police interactions and safety concerns. We talk to the narrator of the PBS series Road Scholars: Chasing the Dream ahead of its television premiere. The series unites 12 adolescent boys with 40 men from around the country, including former Jacksonville Sheriff Nat Glover and Air Force hero-turned-civil rights leader Alton Yates.
