As part of its Annual Human Trafficking Awareness event, Rethreaded hosts a candid discussion about “demand reduction.” The discussion includes a panel of subject matter experts, representatives of trafficking survivors and Megha Parekh, executive vice president and chief legal officer of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jan. 23 event is titled Human Trafficking Awareness Month Panel: How to Put Human Trafficking Out of Business. We also talk with First Coast Crime Stoppers about a recent reward increase for human trafficking cases, boosting payouts for successful tips from $3,000 to $7,500.
Guests:
- Kristen Keen, founder and CEO of Rethreaded.
- Jason Jones, chief operating officer of Rethreaded.
- Chase Robinson, executive director of First Coast Crime Stoppers.
And, digging deep to heal. The organizers of the Davis Street Soil Project aim to connect the residents of the historic Sugar Hill community — much of which was destroyed through urban renewal and highway projects — to the land. Using a mix of science and storytelling, the project will transform an empty lot on North Davis Street into a beekeeping cooperative and microfarming effort. We discuss the vision with the local organizers of a series of related workshops.
Guests:
- Nance Klehm, founder, director and chief ecologist with Social Ecologies.
- Noelle Barber, Sugar Hill landowner.
Then, a visit with some of the cast and crew behind The Limelight Theatre’s production of Crimes of the Heart. The darkly comedic drama tells the story of three eccentric southern sisters reuniting in their small hometown as they grapple with family tensions, personal struggles and a series of unexpected events that test their bonds. We talk to the cast about bringing the Beth Henley classic to the local stage.
Guests:
- Kyle Geary, actor in the role of Doc Porter.
- Mary Elizabeth Schubert, actor in the role of Meg Magrath.
- Eliza Kiss, actor in the role of Babe Botrelle.
- Day Stanchi, stage manager of The Limelight Theatre’s Crimes of the Heart.
