Disaster law and the future of FEMA

Noah Berger
/
AP

We talk to an expert in disaster law about what to expect in the weeks and months ahead, from insurance coverage disputes to FEMA assistance, as well as the role of climate change in disaster insurance. We also discuss the California fires' practical and political implications for Florida.

Guest:

  • Latisha Nixon-Jones, associate professor of law at Jacksonville University.

Then, teaching sound ethical practices to high school students. The University of North Florida hosts the First Coast High School Ethics Bowl, a competition aimed at getting participants to engage in thoughtful and systematic debate about real-life ethical challenges. The competition asks students to defend positions they actually hold and win by demonstrating they’ve tackled the issue with rigor and respect for their fellow competitors.

Guests:

  • Dr. Mihana Mitchell, ethics engagement fellow at the Florida Blue Center for Ethics at the University of North Florida.
  • Trish Nguyen, UNF student and intern at the Florida Blue Center for Ethics.

And, beautiful music on a harrowing theme. Bold City Opera presents a dual performance of Another Sunrise and For a Look or a Touch, operas that follow the lives of two different Holocaust survivors while exploring shared themes of memory, trauma and resilience.

Guests:

  • Brandon Smith, executive artistic director at Bold City Opera.
  • Marilyn Sharp, lead of Another Sunrise.
  • Christopher Robertson, role of Gad Beck in For a Look or a Touch.

Plus, the 18th annual DONNA Marathon Weekend runs (literally) through Downtown Jacksonville and the Beaches this year, with events scheduled Jan. 31 to Feb. 2. The theme of this year’s race is Destination: Fearless. The events support The DONNA Foundation, created by Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan, who currently serves in an unpaid role. The nonprofit foundation provides financial assistance and support to families living with breast cancer.

Guests:

  • Amanda Napolitano, executive director of The DONNA Foundation.
  • Kristie Kirschner, breast cancer survivor and longtime DONNA supporter.
