As part of our ongoing Black History Month coverage, we sit down with Jacksonville's first Black pediatrician to discuss his life, career and recent recognition. The recipient of a OneJax Life Achievement Award has devoted himself to advancing the cause of health in the Black community, from founding the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Northeast Florida and Volunteers in Medicine Jacksonville, to working to bridge medical disparities on the First Coast. He’s joined by one of his biggest supporters — and the man who nominated McIntosh for the award.
Guests:
- Dr. Charles McIntosh, OneJax Gold Medallion for Lifetime Achievement honoree.
- Lawrence Dennis, educator, Kids Hope Alliance board member, executive director of the Kappa Alpha Psi Jacksonville Foundation.
Then, why was the FBI surveilling Jacksonville’s civil rights leaders like A. Philip Randolph and James Weldon Johnson? We talk with a library historian about those revealing files, as well as the extensive collection of historic Black newspapers, photographs and government documents that compose the Main Library’s African American History Collection.
Guests:
- Imani Phillips, special collections historian, African American History Collection at the Jacksonville Public Library.
And, putting special needs kids center stage at a local fashion show. We preview the annual Heart of the Runway fundraiser, which benefits students and programs at the North Florida School of Special Education, and tell you how you can get involved to support the cause.
Guests:
- Emily Knight-Smith, director of advancement, North Florida School of Special Education.
- Kristen Remeika, mom of a student and Heart of the Runway model.
