This black bear was spotted atop a tree in Tampa on May 17, 2013. The bear population has been on the rise, so state wildlife officials are calling for a bear hunting season.

It’s been nearly 10 years since the state of Florida held its last black bear hunt. Since that time, wildlife officials say the state’s bear population has flourished. But hunting opponents challenge the state’s numbers, noting the state hasn’t done a thorough population survey for a decade. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will host three virtual meetings this week to collect feedback from state residents. We discuss the proposal with a hunting opponent and tell you how you can get involved.

A new collaborative effort involving the city of Jacksonville, the local Audubon Society and the Jacksonville Zoo aims to dim the skies to protect the increasingly imperiled bird population. We discuss why the Northeast Florida region is a critical part of migratory flight paths and what ordinary people can do to help.

Guests:

  • Elizabeth Filippelli, conservation director at the Duval Audubon Society.
  • Ashantae Green, sustainability manager for the city of Jacksonville.
