Ending 'demolition by neglect'

Resident News

From the Ford Motor Co. assembly building to Riverside Avenue’s Fire Station No. 5 to the old Greyhound Bus Station, Jacksonville has lost many iconic historic structures in recent years. It has also lost dozens of historic homes, often through what city experts call “demolition by neglect.” That’s the focus of a newly released task force report, which aims to end the practice. Whether it’s a loophole to avoid historic preservation guidelines or a manifestation of financial insolvency, the report says "demolition by neglect” is preventable. We discuss the task force recommendations and the timeline for implementing them — before it’s too late.

Guests:

  • Julia Epstein, architect, Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission member, vice chair of the Demolition by Neglect Task Force.
  • Thomas Register, municipal code compliance division chief for the city of Jacksonville, Demolition by Neglect Task Force adviser.
  • Crissie Cudd, Realtor and historic real estate expert.

Then, saving the “Red Hut” in Atlantic Beach. We discuss efforts to restore the nearly 100-year-old Troop 37 Scout headquarters with two people who have deep roots in the local scouting community.

  • Daniele Giovannucci, youth advancement chair, Boy Scout Troop 37.
