Portrait of German-born American political theorist and author Hannah Arendt (1906 - 1975), 1949.

One of the most influential political thinkers of the 20th century, Hannah Arendt spent much of her life trying to understand the roots of tyranny through the rise of Nazism and Stalinism. In her seminal book, The Origins of Totalitarianism, Arendt explored how the barbarism and mass violence that defined both movements could occur in a civilized society. The new documentary Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny tracks her evolution as a philosopher and writer, and her ultimate thesis about “the banality of evil.” We talk to the documentary’s executive producer ahead of a screening and discussion about the film at WJCT Studios on May 28.

Guests:

  • Jeff Bieber, executive producer, Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny.
  • David McGowan, president and CEO of WJCT Public Media.

Then, in the years since its inception in 2001, the Women's Giving Alliance has literally spent its way to effecting change on the First Coast. On Tuesday, the collective giving initiative of The Community Foundation surpassed the $10 million mark in grantmaking, with an additional $600,000 donation focusing on addressing violence against women and girls. We discuss the concept of collective giving and how a relatively small donation of $1,500 a year from more than 450 members generates generational impact.

Guests:

  • Sabeen Perwaiz, president at the Women's Giving Alliance.
  • Wanda Willis, vice president of civic leadership at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida.
