What's Health Got to Do with It?

The heart and brain connection

Katherine Streeter

NPR

A common heart condition affecting millions of Americans could significantly increase the risk of stroke, but it often goes undetected. A cardiac electrophysiologist explains how atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm that is symptomless in nearly two-thirds of cases, is emerging as a major link between heart and brain health. He outlines the warning signs many people overlook, who is most at risk, and how new technologies like smartwatches are helping diagnose AFib earlier.

Guest: Dr. Matthew McKillop, medical director, electrophysiology program, Baptist Health

Walk with a doc

A new community-based approach to brain health is gaining traction, with research showing that regular physical activity, including walking, may help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Leaders from AARP Florida and the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center discuss a growing national program that brings doctors out of clinics and into neighborhoods, combining movement, education and social engagement. They explain how even small habit changes can positively affect brain health.

Guests:

  • Jill Auld, associate state director for outreach and engagement, AARP Florida
  • Victor Cora, senior program coordinator, Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Mayo Clinic
