What's Health Got to Do with It?

Food as medicine; Klotho gene

Lily Padula for NPR

The growing “food as medicine” movement is pushing healthcare systems to make nutrition a core part of managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity. More practitioners are beginning to treat food as a therapeutic intervention through personalized diet therapy, produce prescriptions and medically tailored meals. A dietician discusses how personalized nutrition therapy differs from generic dietary advice and why experts believe improving access to healthy food and nutrition education could reshape health outcomes and health costs in the future.

Guest: Alison Steiber, chief impact officer, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

Long live brain health

A potential treatment approach for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other brain diseases is in the early stages of clinical development. A biotech researcher explains how the Klotho gene, a naturally occurring anti-aging protein, has been linked to neuronal repair, reduced inflammation and extended lifespan in animal studies. Klotho Neurosciences is currently developing experimental treatments that increase Klotho protein expression in targeted tissues.

Guest: Dr. Joseph Sinkule, CEO of Klotho Neurosciences
