The Super Bowl matchup is set, and there are some First Coast connections with the teams. Cole Pepper checked in with Melissa Ross with his weekly sports wrap, including Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman's boisterous post-game interview.
Broncos v. Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVII
Denver beat the Patriots 26-16 behind 400 yards passing from Peyton Manning, while Seattle won a slugfest with San Francisco, 23-17.
On the AFC side, Denver's defensive coordinator is former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio, and former Jaguar Terrance "Pot Roast" Knighton now plays for the Broncos.
Also, Champ Bailey, who is from Folkston, Ga. and played at the University of Georgia, will play in the Super Bowl for the first time in his 15 year career.
Local NFC connections include former Clay High star Cliff Avril, who made a big play forcing a fumble yesterday. Also, current Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley was previously the defensive coordinator in Seattle.
Perhaps more talked about today than the actual play during yesterday's championship games was this post-game interview by Seahawks corner Richard Sherman:
The Senior Bowl is this week in Mobile, Ala. The Jaguars coaches are there to coach the south squad. It gives the Jaguars coaches an opportunity to get up close and personal with a number of the prospect for this spring's draft.
UNF Takes River City Rumble
Jacksonville University and The University of North Florida played the first of two meetings in the River City Rumble on Friday, and UNF held on for a four point win in front of more than 5,000 at UNF.
The two schools are in 3rd and 4th place in the conference and will face one another on Valentine's Day.
