A recent AAA survey found that close to half of Florida residents are not prepared for a possible hurricane.
The news comes as the first named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season barrels toward the Caribbean.
As newly-upgraded, category 3 hurricane Danny blows toward the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, a new survey of more than 800 people released by AAA’s Consumer Pulse shows a little more than half of Florida and Georgia residents are actually preparing for storms.
AAA spokesman Josh Carrasco says the survey also found that one in five residents wouldn't evacuate their homes for a hurricane.
“Of those that would evacuate, only half would leave if a hurricane was category three or higher,” Carrasco said. “So, we just really want to encourage people to have a plan in place.”
In addition to those findings, Carrasco says more than half of respondents were uninformed about their flood insurance policies. According to AAA, the overall percentage of unprepared residents has gone relatively unchanged over the last year.
