A Broward County private school is facing tough questions after it expelled a black student for cursing at a white basketball coach.
Last month, American Heritage School in Plantation expelled basketball player Cyrus Nance. The teen’s mother and attorneys are calling the punishment too severe and discriminatory against the black student, who attended the school on scholarship. The ongoing controversy has generated high profile attention: Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade and actress Gabrielle Union have made statements in support of the student; the couple has children at the school. WLRN reporter Nadege Green has been following the story and joined Sundial to share more of the details.
Dec. 18 is International Migrants Day. For Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski, the issue of migration hits close to home. For more than four decades, Wenski has worked closely with South Florida’s immigrant community. Wenski regularly makes trips to Latin America and Haiti to deliver mass and religious services. Earlier this year, he went to Congress along with several El Salvadoran ministers to advocate on behalf of immigrants who have Temporary Protected Status (TPS). El Salvador is one of six countries covered by TPS, despite attempts by the Trump administration to rescind the status. Wenski joined Sundial to talk about immigration, healthcare and tense political times around the holidays.
The Sundial Book Club did not have a December book, but that doesn't mean its members have stopped reading. Nancy Klingener, WLRN’s Florida Keys Reporter, and Connie Ogle, former book editor for the Miami Herald, joined Sundial to talk about books to read during the holiday season. They also shared their picks for the best South Florida books this year and the books they're looking forward to reading in 2019.
