The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has approved a rule change that will extend what had largely been nighttime alligator hunting — between 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. — to 24 hours during the season.

The alligator had been a popular curiosity among kayakers and paddleboarders in Silver Springs State Park, where it was often seen lounging in the sun along the banks of the Silver River. Wildlife officials said it was dangerous because people apparently had been feeding it.
