The American Red Cross said its need for blood after the Orlando shooting Sunday has been met, spokeswoman Kristen Stancil confirmed Tuesday.

The Food and Drug Administration is doing away with a ban on blood donation by men who have sex with men.

OneBlood Northeast Florida Spokeswoman Odette Struys calls the ban “outdated,” adding that HIV testing is much more reliable today than it once was. And she says all donated blood undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it’s disease free.

A Northeast Florida man is being called a “pint-sized hero” by the the local medical community.

Harold Green, of St. Augustine, donated his 100th gallon of blood Monday.

"Donating blood means to me helping other people," said Green.

Green started giving blood at the Jacksonville Blood Alliance in 1986 - one pint every two weeks. Today marks his 503rd donation.

The Blood Alliance distributes the blood to local hospitals. Green’s donations have helped about 1500 patients on the First Coast.
