Orange Park Mall's Owner Files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Washington Prime Group Inc., owner of the Orange Park Mall and 100 other retail properties, filed a “prearranged” Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition June 13.

The next phase phase of construction at the Orange Park Medical Center will include two new inpatient units that will add 48 private patient rooms and a new 20-bed intensive care unit (ICU).

The Clay County Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday approved rezoning 14.9 acres for Orange Park Medical Center Inc. to build a three-story, 60,000-square-foot medical office building to expand the medical campus.

An Orange Park man accused of plotting a terrorist attack on a Sept.  11 memorial has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial, as the Associated Press first reported.

Twenty-year-old Joshua Goldberg was arrested in September after he allegedly sent plans for bombing a Missouri 9-11 ceremony to an FBI informant.

After evaluating Goldberg, a psychologist testified he’s not mentally fit for trial, and a judge agreed.

After years of being a crime magnet in Orange Park, the Rodeway Inn has been ordered to shut its doors.

The fate of the troubled hotel now rests with a Clay County judge, who is deciding whether to approve the Town Council’s order.

Updated 10:23: The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office have given the all clear, and students are returning to class.  

Duval County Public Schools is announcing a lockdown for Andrew Jackson High School.

Students and staff have been evacuated as officers search the school. According to Mark Sherwood, from the DCPS, the students have been relocated to a safe location off campus. Parents are asked not to call their students.

If they want to pick up their children, they can do so at 32nd and Pearl Street,

Clay County Sheriff's Office Warns About Rash Of Break-Ins

People living in Clay County are being told to lock the doors of their homes and cars after nearly a dozen crimes were reported over the past two weeks.

Investigators with the Clay County Sheriff's Office said homes were ransacked, and stolen items included guns, electronics and jewelry.

One homeowner even stopped a burglary in progress by honking a car horn when a burglar was caught trying to damage the front door of a home on Cattail Street in Middleburg, deputies said. The person ran away.

JEA Bills Going Up In Orange Park

Many people who live in Orange Park will soon see an increase in their monthly JEA bills.

The utility company recently sent out letters to about 4,500 customers, telling them that starting April 1, a 10 percent public service tax will be included on every bill, increasing the average bill by nearly $9.

But a local business owner said he's going to get hit a lot harder.

Duwayne Hegel, who recently opened the Urban Bean Coffeehouse Cafe in Orange Park with his wife, said his increase will be closer to $80 a month.

Fire fighters have burned down the home where a 7-year-old Orange Park girl was killed in 2009. The Somer Thompson Foundation arranged for the fire training exercise in Somer’s honor. The foundation now owns the property that belonged to her killer’s family.

Loud cheers erupted from the dozens of people gathered on Orange Park’s Gano Avenue. They watched as smoke billowed, followed by flames, from the one-story brick house where Somer Thompson was killed on her way home from school.

Orange Park police are in the process of visiting all the places where electronic cigarettes are sold to explain what’s in a new city ordinance regulating the vapor smokes.

Under the new law approved this week by the Orange Park City Council, stores will have to keep e-cigarettes behind the counter and they can no longer sell to anyone younger than 18

Plus, people who use e-cigs will now have to smoke outside with their tobacco-using counterparts.
