Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry is advising people to stay off the roads Wednesday, particularly during busy drive times. He’s ordered the closure of all city government offices for non-essential employees Wednesday.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Jacksonville. Curry said that means conditions the city isn’t used to.
“Starting at about 4 a.m., definitely into the morning drive time and even though it may warm up some a bit in the afternoon, into the evening drive time there could be very severe weather,” Curry said.
He said the weather could mean ice on bridges and roads with the possibility of snow. It’s expected the weather will clear up by Thursday, although it will remain cold.
Buses will run on a normal schedule, but that could change if conditions worsen. Curry said the city is also prepared to sand icy roads.
Citizens who have any questions or reports about bridge and road closures, can call 630-CITY. They will operate from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The winter storm won’t affect Duval County public schools — they are still on winter break. But some private schools including the Bolles School have announced closures Wednesday.
Downtown Vision announced outdoor activities scheduled during Wednesday's monthly downtown Art Walk have been canceled. Many indoor venues will continue programming.
