A Duval County teacher has been suspended for putting an autistic student in a closet.

The teacher claims the act was to calm the student down, highlighting  differences in what is considered appropriate ways to deal with special needs students.

Twenty Duval County teachers have won a $500 PowerUp Jax innovation grant for their project proposals.  And one of those teachers will get a bit of extra money, based on public sentiment.

The Duval County School Board tackled charter schools and decided to delay seeking mediation help Tuesday night.

Classic novels including “Catch-22,” “A Catcher in the Rye,” “To Kill a Mockingbird”’ and the Bible have all faced the wrath of individuals or groups seeking to ban from school and public libraries.

The trend continues today with books like “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

This is Banned Books Week and libraries across the country and in Jacksonville are commemorating books that are regularly challenged.

The Duval County School Board and Superintendent Nikolai Vitti met to work through some of their differences Monday morning.

They haven’t been able to agree on academic-achievement targets for students in areas like reading and math, but they did agree on hiring an outside mediator to help work on communication and trust.

Duval County School Board Chair Ashley Smith Juarez said she does not intend to ask fellow board members to vote on terminating  Superintendent Nikolai Vitti's contract this Friday.

Another board member told Vitti and reporters earlier this week that was what Smith Juarez planned to do.

A Duval County School Board committee is recommending teachers take their kids out for recess more often.

 Duval County School Board Chair Ashley Smith Juarez sent an open letter to Duval Superintendent Nikolai Vitti, Tuesday.

Board member Scott Shine sent a letter to media Sunday alleging Smith Juarez would call for Vitti’s firing at a special meeting she scheduled for Friday.

Students from Jacksonville’s Lee High School attended a hearing at the U.S. Senate and a briefing at the White House last week.

The leadership class is hoping to help change how young people experience the juvenile justice system.
