A Jacksonville organization that works with recovering addicts hopes to soon be able to help more people.

Gateway Community Services, now Gateway Steps to Recovery, Thursday launched a $7 million fundraising campaign for renovation and construction.

Plans call for a new two-story building on Stockton Street to house treatment services and administrative offices.

Gateway’s existing building, which was once a Holiday Inn, will also be renovated to include more transitional housing for patients and their families.

Gateway  CEO CandaceHodgkins says, “We’re trying to break down the obstacles, break down the barriers, and create a place where people can continue to live and be productive in our community.”

Gateway treats addicted adults and adolescents.

It also provides specialized programs for pregnant women and mothers, including an on-site early learning center for infants and children up to age 12 with recovering parents.

The capital campaign is the first undertaken by the 37-year-old organization.

Cyd Hoskinson began working at WJCT on Valentine’s Day 2011.
