The Jacksonville Transportation Authority has reached a deal to design a transportation hub to integrate key local, regional and intracity services downtown.
The project, called the Jacksonville Regional Transportation Center, will combine skyway, First Coast Flyer, city and Greyhound bus lines into one, massive glass covered complex in the LaVilla neighborhood.
The JTA board settled on a team of architects from the two firms — Pond and Michael Baker — which won a design contest.
Construction of a Greyhound hub is slated to begin in January of 2017. The rest of the project is expected to be completed September of 2019.
“Many of the world’s great cities have bustling transit stations through which trains, buses, taxis, pedestrians and bicycles all come together in an urban center,” said JTA CEO Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. in a news release. “We are excited to see the economic development that will result from having a robust transportation center in the heart of LaVilla.”
