Jax Symphony Director Returns For Season Finale, Lays Out Vision For Future

Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra

On Thursday and Friday, the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra will play its final concerts of the season. Both nights at 8 p.m., the orchestra will appear at the Times-Union Center’s Jacoby Symphony Hall.

The shows mark the return of JSO Music Director Courtney Lewis. He says he’s been largely tied up with previous engagements since the symphony hired him last year.

Lewis said, "I only conducted the beginning and end of this season because when I got the job, I was already quite busy this season. So, I’m looking forward to next year when I’ll really be here full time conducting most of the concerts.”

Lewis says this week’s shows are a preview of the types of music he’d like the orchestra to play more often going forward. The play list includes pieces Jacksonville audiences haven’t heard for more than a decade, he says.

And for classical-music lovers who can’t make it to the evening performances, the orchestra is also offering coffee and a condensed version of the show Friday at 11 a.m.
