JTA Skyway Future Uncertain In Light Of Study

Wikimedia Commons

Jacksonville’s Skyway people mover is almost 30 years old. Now, the authority that owns the system is taking steps to figure out what should be done with it next.

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority commissioned a $350,000 study to see what its options are. The consultants came back with a few choices: upgrade the equipment, replace it with new equipment, or shut the thing down.

All of the options cost more than $60 million over a number of years, according to very preliminary figures.

How to make a decision? JTA is setting up a committee of stakeholders, which will spend 90 days mulling the issue. Come January, the authority’s board will pick an option.
