In a surprise move, a top executive at CSX Corp. has left the railroad to become the chief executive officer at United Airlines.

Oscar Munoz was named head of the airline after former CEO Jeff Smisek abruptly announced he was departing. United has been the subject of a federal investigation into its relationship with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Munoz became president of CSX earlier this year. He came to the railroad in 2003 as chief financial officer and then moved to chief operations officer. He was widely seen as a likely successor to current CEO Michael Ward.

Locally, Munoz has been involved in the United Way of Northeast Florida and is a member of the board of trustees of the University of North Florida.
