The WJCT News team is celebrating wins in this year’s Associated Press Broadcasters Awards. The news team took home finalist awards in both categories it entered: Best Continuing Coverage and Best Newscast Under Five Minutes.
Competitors were Florida radio stations with the largest audiences, including public radio and commercial stations in Miami, Tampa and Orlando.
The Best Continuing Coverage finalist award was for WJCT’s stories on the El Faro cargo ship’s sinking, as told in the days and months after the October 2015 disaster. Reporters spoke with family members of the ship’s crew in the first few days as they awaited word on whether rescue was possible. The coverage continued to include in-depth reports on the Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation’s hearings into the incident.
The Best Newscast Under Five Minutes finalist award went to Morning Edition anchor Michelle Corum for an August newscast including local and state stories. The judges wrote, “Solid mix of content and voices. Excellent delivery." Last year, Michelle won the first-place award in the same category.
Congratulations!
