07/01/16: Media Roundtable Week In Review; Summer Safey Tips; Black On Black Rhyme Jax

Media Roundtable

We discuss the week's biggest news stories with our roundtable of local journalists: Mark Woods, Florida Times-Union columnist; Claire Goforth, Folio Weekly editor; Tim Gibbons, Jacksonville Business Journal editor; and WJCT News analyst John Burr.

Topics include the controversy surrounding a recent Florida Times-Union profile of City Councilman Reginald Gaffney and his nonprofit Community Rehabilitation Center, a new poll showing Marco Rubio neck-and-neck with Democrat Patrick Murphy for the US Senate, and more.

Summer Safety Tips

Summer is a time that kids look forward to all year. They’re off school and get to give their brains a rest.

But for many parents it’s also a time of year to dread. They usually have to figure out a way to ensure their children are being cared for when they’re at work, but even when they are able to be at home, kids are still that much more susceptible to injury.

We hear some tips for protecting kids from common life-threatening injuries during the summer from Dr. Marie Crandall, deputy medical director for injury prevention, and Rebecca Melvin, education and injury prevention coordinator, with UF Health's TraumaOne Flight Services.

Black on Black Rhyme

Jacksonville poet Ebony Payne-English, founder of the Jacksonville chapter of the national arts group Black on Black Rhyme, joins us to discuss their efforts focusing on minority artists and their stories.

Black on Black Rhyme Jacksonville recently launched a service campaign to raise funds for artistic and community development in Duval County.

Payne-English also performs a poem in studio.

Sean Birch joined the WJCT team in late 2011 and was with the company until 2016.
