3/21/2017: TEDx Jacksonville Waterways; ICARE; Jax Books Fest

Tuesday on “First Coast Connect” we discussed the future of Jacksonville’s waterways with City Council President Lori Boyer and Downtown Investment Authority CEO Aundra Wallace. Interfaith Coalition for Action, Reconciliation & Empowerment co-President Geneva Pittman, former ICARE President Pastor Bruce Havens and Folio Weekly editor Claire Goforth discussed a dispute between the organization and Mayor Lenny Curry, and local authors Brenda Jackson and V. Brooks Dunbar joined the show to talk about Saturday’s Jax Book Fest at the Main Library.

TEDx Jacksonville Waterways

TEDx Jacksonville is joining with city leaders in an upcoming event focusing on “Water: Duval’s Untapped Resource.” The idea is to brainstorm on ways to better showcase our water assets to the public and to tourists. The event will feature a live panel of experts on 5:30 p.m to 8 p.m. on April 5, at Jacksonville University’s Terry Concert Hall. Tickets cost $12 and admission includes light refreshments.

ICARE Flap

Folio Weekly recently reported on a meeting between Mayor Lenny Curry and faith leaders. Pastors James Wiggins and Phillip Baber claim Curry threatened to withhold support of keeping open the Jacksonville Day Resource Center if they went to the press. Curry denies the conversation took place. The Center that provided needs for the homeless closed in October of 2015.

Jax Book Fest

Saturday marks the city’s inaugural Jax Book Fest at the downtown Main Library, featuring more than 150 authors, both local favorites and nationally known headliners. Jackson is a best selling romance novelist who has published 117 books. She is also the most published African-American novelist in history. Dunbar is author of “Diva Decisions: How to Get from Smart to Intelligent by Claiming Your Power of Choice.”

The Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Producer Kevin Meerschaert can be reached at kmeerschaert@wjct.org, 904-358-6334 or on Twitter at @KMeerschaertJax.
