11/07/2018: Election Wrap; Celebration Of Valor; Obesity & The Millitary

It was a Republican sweep in Florida Tuesday night as the GOP kept the governor’s mansion and apparently unseated Democratic Senator Bill Nelson with that race headed for a likely recount.

All this as the Democrats across the nation retake the House of Representatives while Republicans strengthen their hold on the U.S. Senate.

Celebration Of Valor

Sunday the nation will commemorate Veterans Day.  In Jacksonville, the Celebration of Valor is an annual series of events honoring the service and sacrifice of the First Coast’s proud military community.

Bill Spann, the Military and Veteran Affairs director for the City of Jacksonville, joined us with a look at the activities planned. A full list of events is available here.

Obesity And The Military

Obesity in the military is a big problem. A third of recruitable Americans ranging in from age 17 to 24 can’t enlist because they can’t meet the fitness standards to get into the military.

Stephanie Lincoln is a Former Army Captain, and Founder and CEO of Fire Team Whiskey Military Health and Fitness. She joined with a look at how her organization is working to address obesity in the military.

Oyster Roast For The St. Johns River

The St. Johns Riverkeeper is holding its annual Oyster Roast, which is a fundraising event that supports the organization’s advocacy, outreach and education programs.  

Riverkeeper Outreach Director Kelly Patton and featured artist R Land joined us with a preview.
