As Hurricane Dorian bears down on Florida's east coast, it’s one more element of stress on the state that all of us could do without. That especially includes our kids.
Increasingly, local children are dealing with stressful situations such as the burden of poverty and community violence. Jacksonville has already passed 100 homicides for the year. Other issues like domestic violence, parental incarceration, substance use, and generational trauma are deeply worrying for child advocates here on the First Coast.
Dr. Mikah Owen is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UF College of Health in Jacksonville, and studies the effects of toxic stress on kids. He joined us to discuss some ways to create a more child-friendly city.
