The conviction of Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd has led many to call for police reform. A bill passed by the Florida Legislature proposes changes to law enforcement practices.
The bill limits the use of chokeholds by officers, requires law enforcement agencies to conduct independent investigations conducted by a separate law enforcement agency into incidents that led to death, and requires officers to be better trained on the use of force.
The bill moved quickly through the Florida House and Senate, and is currently headed to Gov. Ron Desantis.
The bill has been called a start for improving relations between the community and law enforcement, but some have also criticized it, saying it doesn't go far enough.
State Rep. Cord Byrd, and State Sen. Andrea Gibson called in to discuss the bill.
