After having one of their best seasons ever, the Jacksonville Jaguars now turn their attention to the future.
As WJCT Sports analyst Cole Pepper explained to First Coast Connect host Melissa Ross on Monday, a handful of Jaguars players are facing free agency and may not be returning to the team.
“[They include] linebacker Paul Posluszny, who becomes a free agent; cornerback Aaron Colvin; Marquis Lee and Allen Robinson, wide receivers; maybe Marcedes Lewis,” said Pepper.
The five players will be in the final, most expensive year of their contracts with the Jaguars, according to Pepper, although he doesn’t expect their pay to threaten the team’s salary cap.
Quarterback Blake Bortles' future with the team is also an open question.
“He’s due $19 million under his fifth year option. If he plays on the number, that’s a big chunk of change. So they have until March 14th to make a decision whether to have him play at that number, sign him to a new long-term contract or let him go,” said Pepper.
Bortles helped the Jaguars make it to the AFC Championship game this season, where they narrowly lost to the New England Patriots.
The Patriots will face the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl this Sunday.
