Early Voting In Florida's Primary: What You Need To Know

The Duval County Supervisor of Elections Main Office at 105 E. Monroe Street in downtown Jacksonville.

More than one million voters had cast ballots in the primary election by Sunday night, one day after early voting expanded to all 67 Florida counties.

Our News4Jax partner reports the Florida Division of Elections' website shows that more than 861,452 voters have mailed in their ballots and more than 162,631 people have voted at early voting polling places. Duval County, which opened its early voting sites on Monday, had received 2,144 in-person votes by Sunday evening and 14,456 mailed in ballots with verified signatures.

"Everything that we’ve seen so far, we’ve not seen any issues -- nothing irregular," Duval County Supervisor of Elections Mike Hogan said.

Under state law, all states had to open at least one early voting site by Saturday and keep it open at least eight hours per day for seven days. All precincts in all counties will be open for Florida primary voting on Aug. 28.

Early voting uses the same type of voting equipment that is used at the polls on Election Day and voters can cast ballots at any location in their county. Early voting is not available the day before the election. On Election Day, voters can only vote at their assigned precincts.

In order to vote at the polls during early voting or on Election Day, citizens must show a current and valid picture and signature identification. (List of acceptable forms of photo identification) If your photo identification does not contain your signature, you will be required to show an additional form of identification that provides your signature.

Absentee voting, or voting by mail, continues through the close of business on Aug. 28. Voters can request a ballot mailed through Aug. 22 or they can be picked up at their local elections office at any time up to and including Election Day.

The top races are the gubernatorial primaries, but all three Florida cabinet posts are contested this year. There's also hotly contested primaries in some Congressional, Florida state Senate and House districts, as well as school boards and, in some counties, county commission and city commission races. All voters will also pick new judges for circuit and county courts and those in Jacksonville will vote in a special election for a new tax collector.

Hogan said the most common mistake voters make is not knowing what's on the ballot.

"We send out 500,000 sample ballots and some folks come in for the first time to look at the ballot when they’re getting ready to vote," Hogan said. "You need to be prepared before you get there."
