Selmont Hoping To Unseat Rutherford In District 4 Congressional Race

Attorney Ges Selmont of Ponte Vedra Beach is the Democrat trying to unseat incumbent Republican Congressman John Rutherford.

Rutherford, a former Jacksonville' sheriff, won his first election to Congress in 2016 in Florida’s 4th district with 70 percent of the vote. The district makes up parts of Duval, Nassau and St. Johns Counties.

But Selmont said on First Coast Connect Tuesday that voters in the district are now looking for a change and points out Rutherford has not been accessible to all his constituents.

“We have been out there for the last seven months meeting people, we have found there’s pent-up demand for Democratic candidates, and second there’s been large dissatisfaction with John Rutherford, who’s been mostly an absent and unreachable congressman.”
Rutherford did not respond to a request by WJCT News to be interviewed about the race. The midterm elections are set for Tuesday, November 6.
