Khan Will Keep Current Jaguars Leadership Despite Dismal Season

TIAA Bank Field, home of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

After going from a Super Bowl contender in 2017 to a 5-11 season in 2018, Jaguars owner Shad Khan has announced he's sticking with his current leadership.

“I informed Tom Coughlin this week that I want him to see through our shared goal of bringing a Super Bowl title to Jacksonville,” Khan announced Sunday.

Khan said he wants to enter the 2019 season with as much stability as “reasonable or possible” at the top of the football operation.

He also indicated that Coach Doug Marrone and General Manager Dave Caldwell’s jobs are safe – at least for now.

“I have the same trust in Tom, Dave and Doug as I did upon their introduction two years ago, and I do believe our best path forward for the moment is the one less disruptive and dramatic,” said Khan.

Despite the votes of confidence in the front office, Khan made it clear he’s not happy and he expects a turnaround.

“I am far from content with the status quo and while it’s best to put 2018 behind us, I will not overlook how poorly we accounted for ourselves following a 3-1 start.  There were far too many long Sundays over the last three quarters of the season, with today’s loss in Houston being the final example, and that cannot repeat itself in 2019,” said Khan.

The Jaguars lost their final game of the season to the Houston Texans Sunday by a score of 3 to 20.

Our Florida Times-Union news partner speculates that the team may release quarterback Blake Bortles.

First-round pick Leonard Fournette is also on thin ice. NFL.com reported that Marrone told reporters Monday that the Jaguars have voided the remaining guarantees from the running back's rookie contract.
