The WJCT News team is celebrating two statewide wins in the Florida Associated Press Broadcasters Awards for work done in 2018.
Lindsey Kilbride was named the year’s Best Radio Reporter working in a large market, and she also took home the top honor for Best Continuing Coverage of a single topic.
Competitors were Florida radio reporters with the largest audiences, including those working at public and commercial stations in Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa.
In her nomination, WJCT News Director Jessica Palombo wrote:
Lindsey Kilbride’s work in 2018 shows she can deftly cover a variety of topics. Lindsey not only reported but produced all of these stories and podcast episodes. They demonstrate her ability to ask tough questions, as well as her technical skills as an audio producer.
Story submissions included:
- Mary and Claire, an episode of the storytelling podcast she hosts, What It’s Like
- An explainer on Jacksonville zoning laws
- A follow-up with a family she met right after Hurricane Irma and an update on how their low-income neighborhood was doing one year later
- Tiffany and Antwoine, another episode of her podcast, What It’s Like
- A profile of a Jacksonville middle school dance teacher
- Two stories in Lindsey’s continuing coverage of Jacksonville’s transgender shootings. Four transgender women were shot last year in Jacksonville, three of them fatally. The shootings spurred community outrage over police handling of the cases and a call for a better relationship between the sheriff's department and the local LGBT community. Her stories about the department's evolving position spanned most of the year. Lindsey's coverage eventually garnered national attention, with her final piece airing nationally on NPR.
Lindsey’s coverage of the transgender shootings also won her the award for Best Continuing Coverage. The judge’s comment said, “Strong stories on an important topic.”
During the past year, Lindsey has taken on a new role at WJCT News: special projects producer in charge of podcasts and other long-form storytelling efforts.
