Following the recommendations from a five-year study, Clay County is getting ready to make some improvements to CR 220 in Fleming Island.
Clay County traffic engineers studied CR 220 from Lakeshore Drive West to Old Hard Road between 2013 and 2017.
That study resulted in two recommendations: install a traffic signal at the intersection of CR 220 and Lakeshore Drive West to improve traffic flow and allow for vehicle and pedestrian right-of-way and replace the left-turn movement from Old Hard Road onto CR 220 with a right turn/U-turn combination to reduce crashes at the intersection.
“I believe this project will provide significant safety improvements to our county and greatly improve traffic operations,” said Daniel Eisman, Clay County Deputy Director of Engineering and Traffic Operations.
The design and engineering process for the new traffic signal is expected to begin soon. Completion dates for the projects haven’t been announced yet.
The Florida Department of Transportation has secured a Federal Highway Administration grant for the engineering and construction of those improvements.
Clay County Commission Chairman Mike Cella spoke with residents in the area, many of whom told him they’ll be happy to see the improvements.
“Road and traffic solutions remain a high priority for the County Commission and we anticipate the relationships with our federal, state, and local partners will help meet the needs of our growing community,” he said.
