State Rep. Jason Fischer, R-Jacksonville, opened a campaign account Thursday to run in 2022 for a Northeast Florida Senate seat, setting up a potential race against Rep. Clay Yarborough, R-Jacksonville, according to the state Division of Elections website.
Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, cannot run again in 2022 because of term limits, opening what is now Senate District 4 in Duval and Nassau counties.
While Fischer and Yarborough have opened accounts to run in District 4, the district boundaries - and potentially the number - will change in the upcoming once-a-decade reapportionment process. A neighboring district, what is now Senate District 6, also will open in 2022 because Sen. Audrey Gibson, D-Jacksonville, faces term limits.
Meanwhile, in South Florida, Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez, R-Doral, opened an account this week to seek another term in 2022. Rodriguez won one of the most closely watched races in the state in November in Senate District 39 in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.
