Mayor Lenny Curry is urging Jacksonville residents to get vaccinated as COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations surge in Duval County.

In a Monday tweet Curry said, “I got the #COVID19 vaccine and you should too."

Florida now leads the nation in new COVID-19 cases. One in five new U.S. coronavirus cases are being reported in Florida, according to NPR.

Duval County saw more than 6,400 last week, a sharp increase of 2,000 over the previous week.

The pace of vaccinations is picking up locally as well. More than 9,000 thousand residents got vaccinated last week, nearly double the number from the week before.

Curry has said his emergency operations team is working with local hospitals to keep them from being overwhelmed, and that nearly all the COVID-19 patients they treat are unvaccinated.

A list of First Coast area locations to receive a coronavirus vaccine is available here.
